When is it Time to Have a Hip Replacement? - Orthopedics

“Hip replacements are a reliable procedure, and the satisfaction is quite high as long as it’s done for the right reason,” explained Dr. Zach Stone, an orthopedic surgeon on the medical staff of Lee Health. New minimally invasive techniques to hip replacement surgery are helping patients recover faster. “My goal is to do the right surgery for the right patient,” said Dr. Stone. But how does a patient know if they should consider a hip replacement? “Typically, when you start having hip problems will have pain in the groin region, and some patients will have pain in their knee joint just because of the way the nerves are set together, and we call that referred pain,” he said. If the pain is waking you up at night or stopping you from your activities, it’s time to see your doctor. “As a surgeon, we are very meticulous in preparing for these procedures, and I would like to have already of had the conversation with the patient on what exposures and what approach I will be using for the surgery,” Dr. Stone said. But he says, not every patient needs a hip replacement. “When it’s not bone on bone yet, but you have some narrowing in the joint space, there are some things we can do in the interim. We can do injections, physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the hip,” he said. Whether it’s surgery, injections, or physical therapy, doctors can help you determine the best treatment to keep you moving.
