You can Quit Smoking - Pulmonary

When it comes to cigarette smoking—doctors say there is good news. “Currently about 14 percent of adults smoke cigarettes, that’s down from 2005 when it was about 20 percent,” said Dr. Sunil Pammi, a pulmonologist with Lee Health. Once a patient stops smoking, they immediately lower their risk of heart disease. “A lot of patients once they quit, within two weeks or three weeks of quitting, they are already breathing better, feeling better, feeling less fatigued sometimes,” he said. Doctors say over time smoking can harm every organ in the body, putting the patient at risk for a variety of cancers, including head and neck cancer, throat cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, even bladder cancer. “Treatment, medication, or any kind of food would not be allowed to be used if it was known to be as harmful as cigarette smoking is, but yet we allow this to happen,” said Dr. Pammi. Doctors work with patients to help them find ways to stop smoking. “The most successful people sometimes just quit cold turkey, but we do have ways to help people. Most of that involves medications, and we also use nicotine replacement therapy to help them quit,” he said. Support groups, smoking cessation programs, and talking to your physician can help patients improve their health and become a non-smoker.
