Community Is Stronger than Cancer: The NEW Cancer Support Community at Lee Health

In the challenging landscape of cancer care, a powerful truth emerges: Community Is Stronger Than Cancer.
In June, this belief will become reality when the Cancer Support Community at Lee Health Cancer Institute officially opens for anyone affected by cancer. Free and available to anyone in Southwest Florida, the program’s benefits are not tied to a particular healthcare system, provider, or location, says Tammy Zinn, Clinical Support Director at the Lee Health Cancer Institute.
“What makes this program special is that it recognizes that each person's journey with cancer is unique. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, the Cancer Support Community meets individuals wherever they are in their experience,” Tammy says. “So often, a diagnosis of cancer brings on isolation, anxiety, and depression.”
“The Cancer Support Community helps break down those barriers by offering emotional and social support for everyone affected by cancer—patients, family members, caregivers, and survivors.”
The groundbreaking initiative stands as the only program of its kind between Sarasota and Miami.
Comprehensive support for everyone, and tailored just for you
The program provides social support and community by connecting participants with resources and services that give them a sense of community and belonging, Tammy says.
"We provide them with support, education, healthy living experiences, and social connections. Participants can access a wide range of evidence-based programming, which means our services have been rigorously tested and proven effective to benefit participants.”
Participants can access services such as:
- Cancer education on key topics
- Personalized support and counseling
- Expert-led healthy lifestyle sessions
- Resources for loved ones and community referrals
- Post-treatment survivorship support
Expert-led programs in a dedicated space
Located in Suite 401 on the 4th floor of the Lee Health Regional Cancer Center, the Cancer Support Community offers a dedicated space designed to be a destination for healing and connection.
Licensed professionals, such as clinical social workers, exercise specialists, physical therapists, and oncology dietitians, lead the programs. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that participants receive high-quality, specialized care that addresses the full spectrum of their needs.
Breaking down barriers
Accessibility remains a key priority. While many activities take place in the dedicated space at the Regional Cancer Center, much of the programming is also offered via Zoom and instructional videos accessed from the web, ensuring that everyone can participate in a way that suits their circumstances.
"Group support and peer counseling sessions provide opportunities to connect with others who are sharing similar experiences," Tammy says. "When a person feels a sense of belonging and acceptance, they tend to do much better on their cancer journey and all the life changes it brings."
The community aspect is particularly meaningful. Whether participating in exercise classes, art sessions, or music instruction, everyone is welcome.
"It's about community, and they all learn from each other," Tammy notes.
How you can help
As a philanthropically driven program, the Cancer Support Community thrives on community involvement. There are several ways to contribute:
- Volunteer your time and talent by teaching art classes, music, or helping with event planning
- Donate to support the mission
- Spread the word about the program to those who might benefit
