It was a scary situation for onlookers at JetBlue Park during a spring training game between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers on March 6. At the bottom of the first inning, Red Sox infielder Justin Turner took a fastball to the face from Tigers starter Matt Manning.

Turner collapsed, bleeding on the field as Red Sox training staff rushed to his aid. With his face covered by a bloodied towel, Turner was escorted off the field and transferred to a Lee Health hospital.

The Red Sox announced later that Turner had been treated for soft-tissue injuries and monitored for a concussion. Further imaging showed no major head injury, although Turner's facial laceration required 16 stitches.

On the evening of March 6, Turner’s wife Kourtney shared an update via Twitter:

The next morning, Turner thanked Lee Health and Red Sox medical staff with a tweet:

Alex Cora, Red Sox manager, shared his thoughts on the incident: “Anything that is above the shoulders, it’s always scary. Hopefully, he’s OK, and he can join us sooner rather than later.”
