It can help to create peace, improve focus, and clear your mind. Lee Health sleep medicine Dr. Jose Colon says meditation can benefit your overall health. “It can be very helpful for a number of both medical disorders as well as psychological and emotional disorders.”
Which is why health experts are now offering guided meditation classes to teenagers. “Teens, in particular, this is a very high-stress period in their life and they are more likely to suffer from anxiety and insomnia, and mindfulness can help with a lot of these things,” said Dr. Colon.
Monthly mediation classes are now being held at Coconut Point Healthy Life Center and Golisano Children’s Hospital. The hope is to teach teenagers how to be mindful through meditation practices. “One of the hopes that we have is that through a regular practice of meditation that teens can develop self-regulation skills,” he said.
Different types of meditation can benefit different physical and emotional needs—some practices can help with ADHD, sleep, and depression. “One type is an awareness of breath meditation where you focus on your breathing pattern, other types of meditation are body scan meditations, one of my favorite meditations is love and kindness meditations,” Dr. Colon said.
Studies show meditation can help with anxiety, headaches, and stress reduction. Practice health experts hope will help teens better manage stress.
