Frequently Asked Questions

Our cardiothoracic surgeons treat large sized aneurysms using either open surgery or using minimally invasive  endovascular techniques, such as thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR).

Thoacic aorrtic disease is often asymptomatic and may be mistaken for other conditions. When symptoms show warning signs include: sharp pain in the chest, back pain, shortness of breath, trouble swallowing, hoarseness, and rapid heartbeat.

Thoarcic aortic diseas can develop from a variety of causes including:

  • Age
  • Smoking lifestyle
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Genetics and family history
  • Inflammation of aortic valves
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Serious trauma

A thoracic aortic aneurysm is when the aorta becomes weakened by a dilation in the chest. Over time this dialation can become a serious health risk. If the aneurysm ruptures, this can lead to internal blood from the chest cavity and requires immediate emergency care.

Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms Treatment Options

Our vascular surgeons will discuss the most appropriate treatment options with you, considering factors such as the size and location of the aneurysm, your overall health, and personal preferences.

Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR)

  • TEVAR is a minimally invasive procedure that repairs the thoracic aorta via an incision in the groin.
  • The implanted device repairs the diseased aorta, allowing blood to flow properly to the rest of the body.
  • TEVAR allows surgeons to repair a patient’s aorta without a major incision or sternotomy.

Open Aorta Repair or Replacement

  • The open-chest surgical treatment is used to replace the weakened portion of the aorta with a graft.
  • Many patients with a thoracic aortic aneurysm have heart valve disease which may be replaced during the same operation.

Code Dissection

Rapid Response • Immediate Transfer • Excellent Clinical Results

Type A aortic dissections carry a fatality rate of approximately one percent per hour if untreated. Around 25% of patients are present with some form of mal-perfusion, which can impact vital organs. An early detection and rapid surgical intervention is critical.
