Child Advocacy: An Eye on Safety

Our compassionate team members believe in staying proactive and getting the word out about children’s health and safety. Our expert advocates teach proper and effective safety as well as promote mental health awareness, positive parenting, and other initiatives to keep Southwest Florida children happy, healthy, and safe.

Preventing Injuries

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children through age 19. So it is the mission of the Child Advocacy Department at Golisano Children's Hospital to reach as many families in our community with the proper knowledge about injury prevention.

We provide education through community classes, one-on-one sessions, family events and health fairs, and at our patients’ bedside. Child Advocates delivers resources to families residing in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties. Golisano Children’s Hospital is also the lead agency for Safe Kids Coalition of Southwest Florida.

Additional Information

From gun safety to ATV safety, even sleep safety, child advocates at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida are focused on keeping children out of the hospital. “A child advocate is somebody that’s passionate about keeping kids safe in the community, whether that means one-on-one with the family, or one-on-one with kids, grandparents,” said Sally Kreuscher, child advocacy program coordinator with Golisano Children’s Hospital. Child advocates have a variety of programs created to keep kids safe. “We work with all different types of risk areas, such as child passenger safety, drowning prevention, unsafe safe environments, medication safety, a little bit of everything,” she explained. Many of the programs created are also based on common injuries seen at Golisano Children’s Hospital. “A child advocate isn’t one that judges or wants to look down on a family. We really want to build them up and prevent them from coming back for something like an injury,” said Kreuscher. Child advocates can meet with families in the hospital or out in the community. Families have the option of participating in safety classes like CPR and First Aid, or free demonstrations like car seat safety. “We want to not only think about the parent, but we want to think about grandparents and babysitters,” she said. Each program is designed to educate families and caregivers on safety techniques that can prevent children from getting hurt.
