There are more than 200,000 cases of type one diabetes diagnosed in the US every year. “It’s a disease of insulin deficiency. They don’t make any the insulin. They do take the insulin they use well; they don’t have insulin resistance,” said Lee Health Diabetes Educator Annette McClenahan.
Insulin helps regulate blood sugar. It was once known as juvenile diabetes, but it can happen at any age. It is caused by an autoimmune response in the body. Patients have to test their blood sugar often and take multiple insulin injections a day. “Your come up with insulin doses specific to your bodies needs that help take care of covering carbohydrates when you eat a meal, and help correct a high blood sugar prior to that meal,” said McClenahan.
The recommended blood sugar range is from 80-130. If the blood sugar is chronically high, complications can include stroke, heart attack, blindness, limb loss, or kidney failure, however, “We know based on evidence and research, when people with diabetes keep the blood sugars in those ranges, they are in a good place to prevent complications from diabetes,” said McClenahan.
Low blood sugar also has health risks, so it’s about using insulin and sugar to keep things in balance. If you have a child, some signs that they may have diabetes are, “If they’re drinking and drinking, and cannot quench that thirst. They’re drinking more than they usually drink, and no matter what they drink, they want more,” said McClenahan. Nowadays technology like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors are helping diabetics live happy and fulfilling lives.
