What is hip replacement surgery?
Hip replacement surgery, also known as total hip arthroplasty, replaces a damaged hip joint with an artificial implant. This procedure is recommended for individuals experiencing chronic pain and limited mobility due to conditions like:
- Osteoarthritis: A degenerative disease causing cartilage breakdown.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: An autoimmune condition leading to joint inflammation.
- Avascular necrosis: Loss of bone tissue due to reduced blood supply.
- Hip fractures or tumors: Severe damage requiring surgical intervention.
There are two types of hip replacement:
- Total hip replacement: Replaces both the ball and socket of the joint.
- Partial hip replacement: Replaces only the ball, preserving the socket.
During the procedure, damaged bone and cartilage are removed, and artificial components made of metal, ceramic, or plastic are implanted. These components mimic natural hip movement, improving functionality and reducing pain.
Our specially trained orthopedic surgery specialists offer advanced robotic surgical options to ensure you receive the best care available during your health journey.

Total Hip Replacements and Arthritis
The hip is one of the body's largest joints, and is also a ball-and-socket joint. A ball-and-socket joint is when the rounded surface of a bone moves within a depression of another bone, allowing greater freedom of movement than any other kind of joint. The bone surfaces of the ball and socket are covered with smooth tissue that enables them to move easily.
When the bones do not move easily, this is what causes pain and potentially arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common type and is the leading cause of hip pain. Osteoarthritis is when the cartilage around the hip gets worn away, resulting in bone-on-bone grinding.

ROSA® Hip Robotic Technology
A solution for you & your unique anatomy
Hip replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can relieve your pain, increase motion, and help you get back to enjoying normal, everyday activities
Before surgery
Your preoperative experience will be like that of most total hip patients. But, unlike traditional hip replacement methods, with ROSA® Hip, a series of x-rays may be used to create a three-dimensional (3D) model of your hip anatomy. This 3D model will enable the surgeon to plan specifics of your hip replacement surgery completely customized to you prior to your surgery.
During surgery
The surgical procedure using ROSA® Hip is similar to traditional total hip replacement, but with a robotic assistant. Your surgeon has been specially trained to use ROSA® Hip in order to personalize the surgical approach for your unique anatomy. The robot does not operate on its own, it does not move unless your surgeon prompts it to. This helps ensure that the plan your surgeon put into place is executed as intended. Throughout your surgery, ROSA® Hip provides your surgeon with data about your hip which helps your surgeon know how to position your implant based on your unique anatomy.
After surgery
Following surgery, you will be hospitalized based upon the recovery plan your surgeon decides is best for you. Recovery time varies, but most people should be able to drive after two weeks. Your surgeon will tell you when and what activities you can return to, and what activities to avoid.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
Your recovery journey is just as important as the treatment itself. Lee Health offers comprehensive rehabilitation services designed to help you regain strength, flexibility, and mobility. Our physical therapists will work with you to create a personalized plan for optimal recovery.
