Rheumatoid Arthritis
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is a an autoimune disease, which means the body’s immune system, which usually fights germs, starts to attack healthy joint tissue by mistake. RA causes joint pain and stiffness, which can make everyday activities harder. This causes painful swelling and can lead to joint damage over time if not treated. RA can also sometimes affect other parts of the body, like the lungs or heart.
Our team of doctors and therapists is here to help you manage RA with treatments that reduce pain, protect your joints, and improve your quality of life. You’re supported by not only rheumatologists but a comprehensive team of health professionals who specialize in the complexities of rheumatic conditions and the entire musculoskeletal system.
Common Symptoms of RA
The symptoms of RA often come on slowly, so it’s important to notice changes and get help early. Common signs include:
- Joint Pain and Swelling – RA usually affects joints on both sides of the body, like both hands or both knees.
- Morning Stiffness – People with RA often feel stiff for more than 30 minutes in the morning, but movement can help.
- Tiredness – Feeling extra tired or worn out is common with RA.
- Warm, Tender Joints – Swollen joints may feel warmer than usual and be sensitive to touch.
- Trouble Moving Joints – As RA progresses, it can make it harder to move certain joints easily.
If you’re experiencing these symptoms, our rheumatology team can help with a treatment plan that’s right for you.
