Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a targeted cancer treatment that combines heated chemotherapy with surgical intervention. At the Lee Health Cancer Institute, we offer HIPEC as an effective approach to deliver concentrated chemotherapy directly to the abdominal cavity during surgery, enhancing treatment outcomes for certain cancer patients.

About HIPEC

Before undergoing HIPEC, patients first have a procedure called cytoreductive surgery, where visible tumors within the abdomen are removed using advanced surgical techniques. Once as many tumors as possible have been excised, a heated and sterile chemotherapy solution is introduced into the abdomen.

This solution, heated to temperatures between 105 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit—similar to a warm bath—is circulated throughout the abdominal cavity for approximately 1.5 hours. This method allows the chemotherapy to penetrate and target any remaining cancer cells effectively. After the treatment, the solution is drained, and the surgical incision is closed.

HIPEC is designed for individuals with advanced surface spread of cancer within the abdomen, provided there is no disease involvement in other parts of the body.

Advantages of HIPEC

  • Facilitates high doses of chemotherapy directly to the affected area.
  • Concentrates treatment within the abdomen while minimizing exposure to other body systems.
  • Enhances the absorption of chemotherapy drugs, increasing their effectiveness against cancer cells.
  • May lead to reduced side effects compared to traditional systemic chemotherapy.
