Hemodialysis Access

Patients with kidney failure rely on hemodialysis to remove waste, excess fluids, and toxins from their blood. To make this life-saving treatment possible, doctors create a hemodialysis access—a specialized entry point that allows for efficient blood flow during dialysis sessions.

At Lee Health, our vascular specialists provide comprehensive care for hemodialysis access, including creation, maintenance, and treatment of complications. Our expert team uses advanced imaging, minimally invasive techniques, and personalized treatment plans to ensure the best outcomes for our patients.

Types of Hemodialysis Access

Hemodialysis access is a surgically created passage that connects blood vessels to a dialysis machine, allowing blood to be filtered and returned to the body. A well-functioning access is essential for effective dialysis treatment and long-term health. Our specialists offer three primary types of hemodialysis access, each suited to different patient needs:

  • The preferred and most durable option
  • Created by connecting an artery and vein, usually in the arm
  • Benefits: Lower risk of infection and clotting, long-lasting
  • A synthetic tube connects an artery and vein
  • Used when an AV fistula is not possible
  • Benefits: Can be used sooner than a fistula, but has a slightly higher risk of complications
  • A temporary tube placed in a large vein in the neck or chest
  • Used for emergency dialysis or when no other access is available
  • Considerations: Higher risk of infection and clotting; best for short-term use

Hemodialysis Access Care and Treatment

To prevent problems and keep your access functioning properly, follow these best practices:

  • Keep the access site clean and dry to prevent infections.
  • Avoid heavy lifting with the affected arm.
  • Check your access daily for redness, swelling, or changes in the thrill.
  • Follow all care instructions from the Lee Health dialysis team.
  • Rotate needle insertion sites to prevent weak spots.
  • Regular monitoring and proper care can significantly extend the life of your access.

If a problem arises, our vascular specialists offer several treatment options:

  • Thrombolysis – Medication or a procedure to break up blood clots.
  • Angioplasty & Stenting – A small balloon is used to open narrowed vessels, and a stent may be placed to keep them open.
  • Surgical Revision – If an access site fails, our surgeons can create a new one to ensure continued dialysis treatment.

Our goal is to restore and maintain your access for optimal dialysis performance while minimizing complications.
